DIY MINERAL FOUNDATION

I’ll be the first to admit that when it comes to makeup ingredients, I generally have a “what I don’t know can’t hurt me” philosophy. However, I have been making an effort lately to become more conscious of what is going on my skin. And I have to tell you, the stuff that’s in most big-name formulas is kind of horrifying.

So a few weeks ago, I decided to try experimenting with creating my own powder foundation. The idea of concocting your own makeup sounds a bit intimidating at first, but I promise it’s not so bad. In fact, the most difficult part was just tracking down the ingredients (I’ll help you out with that).

Keep in mind, this powder is not meant to provide full coverage. It gives a light dusting of coverage and color, which is just fine for most of us. The color of the powder can be tweaked depending on the ingredients and quantities used, but we’ll get into that more in a bit. Read on for the recipe!

Here’s what you’ll need:
2 tablespoons of arrowroot powder (I purchased mine here)
1-2 tablespoons of cocoa powder (depending on desired color)

Optional:
1 teaspoon of finely ground cinnamon for warm skin tones
1 teaspoon of bentonite clay for cooler skin tones (find it here)

1. Begin gradually mixing cocoa powder into arrowroot until you reach desired color depth.

2. Once the basic powder is finished, add in a small amount of cinnamon for warmth, or bentonite for cool toned skin.

3. Test the powder on the face or neck to see if the shade is a match. If not, continue adding in small amounts of your ingredients until you have a better fit.

I have fair skin, so I ended up using 2 tablespoons of arrowroot, 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder, and a tiny pinch of cinnamon.

Enjoy your natural foundation! If you try this recipe, I’d love to see photos of your finished product. Tag us @beautybaronline!
